A MT Evelyn mother of four is campaigning to get safety barriers built at the Monbulk Rd bend where a teenage girl lost her life in a car crash just weeks ago.

Petina Zappia launched a petition last week, urging state politicians and VicRoads to improve safety on the bend near the intersection of Monbulk and Hunter roads.
Mrs Zappia, who lives less than a kilometre from the dangerous bend, said she was worried for the safety of road users, including her four young daughters who would one day use the road.

"We travel that road a number of times every day and we see regular accidents and skid marks where we know cars have gone off," Mrs Zappia said.
"I'm concerned that one day it will be someone we know."
Yarra Ranges councillor Jason Callanan, who was first on the scene when 18-year-old Tanika Pearce lost her life in the November 22 crash, also lent his support to the petition.
"I've witnessed a couple of nasty crashes at this bend, to me it seems quite dangerous," Cr Callanan said.
"I think there's something that can be done."
Yarra Ranges highway patrol Acting Sergeant Graeme Rust said police had submitted recommendations to VicRoads for Armco roadside guardrails to be installed, and an extended bitumen surface.
"It will not happen overnight, but they (VicRoads) do listen to our recommendations," Acting Sgt Rust said.
Acting Sgt Rust said the Yarra Ranges road toll stood at eight, two more than 2012's total of six.
Mrs Zappia said concerned residents could sign the petition at Mt Evelyn Primary School, Silvan Primary School and Princi Motors at 277 Monbulk Rd, Silvan.

WORKS for the Monbulk Soccer Centre are set to kick off with the official sod turning last Friday.
Stage one for the $9.8 million project includes two synthetic soccer pitches with lights, a new pavilion and a new car park and access road.
The event was attended by representatives from the Monbulk Ranges Soccer Club, Yarra Ranges Mayor Jim Child and councillor Jason Callanan, La Trobe MP Laura Smyth and Monbulk MP James Merlino.
Club president Lisa Doolan said the club was absolutely thrilled the project was moving ahead.
“We’re rapt – we’ve had great support from local government and State and Federal Government and we hope it will continue on as the project progresses through different stages,” she said.
“We’re very grateful for the support everyone’s given us.
“It’s just benefited our local community so much, our local primary school and secondary school will have access to it, it’ll be fantastic.”
Ms Smyth said the centre will attract key events to the region which will generate a local and regional economic benefit.
“It will create up to 35 jobs during construction and up to five jobs on completion, which will also have a positive effect on the local community.”

New pavilion for Olinda
A new, state of the art $1.7m pavilion is taking shape at the Olinda Recreation Reserve. Local and visiting clubs will enjoy the fresh, bright training and gym area, change rooms and first aid room. The wider community is set to benefit too, with a spacious multi-purpose area, modern kitchen and meeting room available for use.
Coming to the party with funding for the pavilion were Council ($1m), the state government ($350,000), Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group ($250,000) and the supporting community ($100,000).
$120,000 worth of new lighting is already brightening up the grounds, with Council, the federal government and sports clubs all pitching in for the project.
The new rooms will be used by clubs including Olinda Ferny Creek Football Netball Club, Olinda Ferny Creek Junior Football Club, Olinda Cricket Club, Sassafras Ferny Creek Netball Club and Kalorama Mt Dandenong Tennis Club.
The pavilion is due to be completed in October.

A SILVAN ambulance officer will draw on all the resources he can to drive home the road safety message to young people in the Yarra Ranges.
MICA paramedic Jason Callanan launched the joint initiative last Monday.
Called ROADwhyz Vic: Choices and Consequences, it brings together members from Victoria Police, CFA, SES, ambulance and the health industry as well as those affected by road trauma.
“With the Yarra Valley constantly rating in the top 10 shires for road fatalities and a high proportion of them being young drivers, I realised that something needed to be done,” Mr Callanan said.
“This program has been developed to assist drivers, particularly those aged between the ages of 17-25, as this category is over-represented in road trauma statistics.”
Mr Callanan said the project aimed to make young drivers aware of what really happened in a road crash and the consequences of risky behaviour.
It also aimed to educate learner drivers and their parents and to provide them with the tools, skills and knowledge needed to stay safe on the roads.
“The program participants will be able to take information from experts and apply it to their driving experiences, helping them to see they are in charge of the choices they make,” Mr Callanan said.
